Effective Money-Saving Tips for Students

Effective Money-Saving Tips for Students

I've seen a ton of ways on the internet on how to save money. Some seemed convincing, some seemed to be unrealistic and some are a bit hard to achieve. I, too, have my own personal ways to save money as a student. Saving money is not just a hobby but it is our responsibility.
I came up with simple tips n' tricks for you to save up stuff this school year.
These tips/ways are not difficult to do unless you have an extreme determination and will to do it.

Tip # 01: Be Determined

I know, I know. What a cliche kind of tip! But trust me, you have to be determined to save up some money. If you're not willing to save up money, then you should've never wanted to do it in the first place.

Tip #02: Set Your Goals

Always remember to set small to bigger goals. Don't plan big goals from the start. Saving money is like walking on stairs, you have to take one step at a time. You can set goals of saving 20% of your school allowance per day/month. Then, if you get used to it you can slowly increase the amount of money you put on your thriftbox or bank account. Or you can make a different kinds of goals. You can set a goal of buying a new backpack or a new pair of shoes.

Tip #03: A Thriftbox is your Best Friend

Having a thriftbox is an essential. I know it's a bit old and classic, but trust me. You can either buy a piggy bank, DIY your own thriftbox or you can just use an old container or jar at home (on which I recommend).

Tip #04: Pack Snack and Lunch

Okay. So at school, this tip GREATLY helped me to save more money. I was able to save up over 80% of my allowance just by packing food in school. The great thing about this is that you can finally save up the money you are supposed to be spending on the food you'll eat at lunch. I know, food in the cafeteria or food stalls can sometimes be pretty expensive. But by packing food in school, you don't have to spend much spending money anymore and you get to make your own choice of food.

Tip #05: Don't Count the Money You Earned Every Single Time

I have to admit, I do have the habit of counting the money I earned on my thriftbox whenever I remember. And yes, it does make you keep track on the amount that is already saved up but recently I found out the disadvantage of that habit. Whenever I get to earn a certain amount of money (i.e. Php1000), I tend to try to look for something online that I thought I needed that fits my budget and buy that thing. Hence, I tend to lose track of my actual goals.

So, my advice is, don't check the money everytime. Maybe you can once a week or every three days just to keep track.

Tip #06: Don't Buy Something that You Don't Really Need

Before, I tend to buy tons of things that I thought I needed whenever I go to the school supplies store or any kind of store. I buy more pens, sticky notes, or notebooks even if I still have enough of these things at home.

This can also be applied on food. Who doesn't love food? I, too, most of the time overspend money on food. I know, it can be too difficult. But my best advice is, if you can't do tip #03, then you can just choose a snack that is cheap but hearty at the same time (i.e. porridge, soups).

Tip #07: Sell Things that You Don't Need Anymore

Do you have a new pair of shoes that you bought the wrong size?
Do you plan to upgrade your phone?
Do you have tons of clothes on your closet that are often ignored and were never worn?
Are you decluttering books on your bookshelf?

It's is easy and convenient to sell things now especially online. It can either be an unused or used item. There is a site I know of named Carousell on which is a website where people sell their items in a very reasonable price. You can also use different social media platform to sell your items. Or if not, you can try selling them to your friends, classmates, or neighbors.

Tip #08: Be Patient

Saving up money is not as easy as you count 1, 2 and 3.
It's a kind of long and difficult journey, but in the end, it's worth it. Do not expect too much of yourself and just do what you think you can.

So here are the tips that I have for you.
Let me know if you have more tips to share and I'll be glad to add it in this post.
